Waterbody Extraction And Monitoring Using EOfactory.ai

May 30, 2020 Artificial Intelligence Machine Learning Satellite Technology

Many ramifications arise from rapid urbanization, one of which is the decrease in water bodies in cities. Encroachment into water bodies or additions of waste on their water bodies causes a steep decrease in urbanized areas. One such example of this decrease is in Bangalore, India. Researchers have concluded that there were 51 healthy lakes in 1985, where there are only 17 lakes today.

Skymap Global decided to do a study, harnessing the power of machine learning to detect water bodies. Skymap Global used our machine learning platform EOfactory to run tests.

EOfactory is a cutting edge platform that gives users the flexibility to upload their own data and run machine learning algorithms on the data to receive crucial information. The focal point of EOfactory is to let Artificial intelligence run the whole process of extracting information.

EOfactory allows users to search and download latest or archived satellite images

For the present analysis, Sentinel 1 data with 50m resolution and 4 band images were downloaded. To train the machine to what needs to be detected, a small area of size 1 sq Km to 2 Sq Km is selected which represents the majority of 100 Sq Km. Majorly, Water, Urban, and Other categories selected and classified. Our training tools aid in helping to classify and identify the information that you need.

A small area can be used to start training the AI model
Once the training area is chosen, users can begin to classify and create models through visual inspections and interpretations
With a couple of iterations the model can be refined

With a visual inspection, we can estimate the output accuracy of the AI in terms of classification for water in this training data.

Once the training is completed, users can run at scale to detect water bodies . using the water-body model created
Once the model is running through your whole area of interest, our machine learning algorithms automatically detect all the waterbodies in the area.
A closer inspection of all the water bodies automatically detected by EOfactory’s AI/ML techniques
This output can be saved as polygons

With polygons, change detection with time series images can be easily done.

The whole process from downloading images to getting the output of water bodies took less than 20minuites. EOfactory can monitor these lakes automatically and send alarms to stakeholders if there are any changes that are identified around the water bodies. The monitoring can be done weekly, fortnightly, or monthly. This simple and effective system can be used by any administration. Administration can issue notices and stop the encroachment in the budding stage itself. This will save costs for both authorities or to the owners of land who fell ray to the encroachment.

EOfactory is the next revolutionary platform for earth observation data analysis. The multitude of use cases is in our imagination. EOFactory can be used for urban expansion monitoring, green cover monitoring, change detection, and much more spatial analysis. It does not require previous experience as the output is generated from Satellite Images and represented visually which can be understood by anyone.

Come try EOfactory today for free! It is an online free-to-use platform that does not require programming or coding for you to create your own AI/ML models. Come start your AI journey today!
